Chinese Jade consists basically of Nephrite and Jadeite. Nephrite has been used for thousands of years and comes mostly from the Chinese Turkestan region. Jadeite was introduced into China during the late seventeenth century from Burma. Other materials have been used recently in China and collected also as Jade. These materials carry names like Soo Chow Jade, New Jade, etc. They have a softer texture and toughness.

Physical properties of Nephrite & Jadeite:

The chemical composition for Jadeite is NaAlSi₂O_6. The chemical composition for Nephrite is Ca₂(MgFe)₅(Si₄O₁₁)₂(OH)₂

Hardness: On the Mohr's scale of hardness, Jadeite has a hardness of 6.5 to 7, and Nephrite has a hardness of 6 to 6.5.
Toughness: Next to black diamond, Nephrite is believed to be the toughest mineral around. Jadeite is not quite as tough as Nephrite, but still very tough.
Specific Gravity: Jadeite has a specific gravity of 3.25 to 3.35, and Nephrite has a specific gravity of 2.9 to 3.
Index of Reflectivity(IR): Jadeite has an IR of 1.64 to 1.67, and Nephrite has an IR of 1.6 to 1.64.
Nephrite has a more fibrous structure, whereas Jadeite has a more crystalline structure.
Both Jadeite and Nephrite have excellent wearability and are not heat sensitive.
Nephrite has a more oily surface texture than Jadeite.
